Retroviruses are classified as exogenous or endogenous depending on how they transmission. In general, endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are not pathogenic in their original hosts, but some ERVs cause disease. The origin and transmission route of XMRV are still unknown at the moment, however, may be derived from ERVs XMRV of rodents, because X-MLV ERVs are inbred and wild mice.
